Sample Lesson Plans

Creating Lesson Plans

I have included several samples of lesson plans I have used in the classroom.  When creating lesson plans, I always begin with the end in mind.  What is the standard I want my students to master?  How will I assess their learning, thinking of both summative and formal assessments?  What can I plan to help guide them to this learning? What types of learners are in my class? How will I differentiate my instruction to reach all learners?  How can I create a collaborative setting for mastering this topic whereby my students can learn from, and with, each other?  Having a plan for lessons will act as a guide to ensure I stay on task and touch all areas of a subject I am trying to teach.  I view my role as the teacher more of a facilitator of student learning rather than the sole source of learning in the classroom.

Sample Lesson Plans:
This is a social studies lesson  that spanned several days.  It was about the branches of the government and involved several 'hands on- minds on' activities for the students to participate in that would allow them to explore the topic further and remain engaged in their learning.

This is a sample math lesson.  The lesson incorporates the use of a PowerPoint as a guide for the pace of the lesson.  The topic of study in this lesson is fractions.  A hands on manipulative heavy station game accompanied the use of this lesson.  Pictures of the fraction station expansion activity are  included in a separate tab on this site.

The following lesson is a literature lesson plan that incorporates several standards.  It has been my experience that most standards require more than one lesson in order for students to fully master the concept.  The standards covered in this lesson are great examples of such standards.  This lesson utilizes standards in fluency, comprehension and writing.  It was designed as a small group lesson retouching and reinforcing essential literacy skills.

The next two lessons are examples of a few science lessons that were taught as a 'backwards design approach' type of lesson.  The concepts are introduced and learned through the completion of a variety of multi-sensory involved activities.  These lessons incorporate the 'hands on-minds on' approach that is vital in students' understanding and retaining the more difficult science standards. you will notice, most of the lessons I create incorporate standards from multiple subject areas.  It is my opinion that teaching standards across the curriculum is the most efficient way to cover the large quantity of standards we are required to teach our students.
